A superb and rare photo of the starting line of the 500cc German Grand Prix of 1954, which was ridden on the ultra fast circuit of Solitude on
the 25
th
of July 1954
.
With number 21 we see the famous BMW works rider Walter Zeller on the BMW RS 500 Rennsport worksracer. It is a very rare shot, if you look carefully you see that Zeller’s Beemer was equipped with BMW’s innovative fuel injection system that BMW experimented with at the time (starting from 1953). It is rare to find a photo of the fuel injected BMW worksracer. At the time it was a true novelty!
In 1956 Zeller wrote history for B.M.W. when he finished 2nd in the 500cc world championship, also on a BMW RS 500 Rennsport. With number 32 we see multiple world champion Umberto Massetti on the mighty MV Agusta four cylinder worksracer. On the ultimate right we see Ken Kavanagh on a Moto Guzzi single cylinder d.o.h.c. worksracer.
A gorgeous photo, as it is a terrific line-up of some of the greatest riders on some of the greatest bikes of the Golden Era of roadracing!
