Japanese Ceramic Clay Bell - Whimsical Okame & Hyottoko Face Design
This is a ceramic/clay bell from Japan.
The whimsical expression and design is of a well-known character called Okame (or Otafuku) & Hyottoko
Size is approximately 2" (W) x 2" (L) x 2.5" (H - without the rope portion)
The bell works - you hear a nice little bell noise when you shake this clay bell.
One half of the face is hyottoko (man) the other half of the face is okame (woman)
Really nice bright colors - shows details of both characters.  Whimsical and fun.
Great conversation piece.
Great as a gift for fans of Asia, or Japan/Japanese items, bell collectors, etc.
Little info:
Hyottoko and Okame masks are usually seen together
Hyottoko (word derived from hi = fire + otoko = man) and his mouth is usually skewed to one side and has a scarf on to protect his head/hair as he
is working on starting a fire.  His mouth is skewed to one side because he is blowing fire with a bamboo pipe.  Kind of a comical character - but is legendary in Japan.  This mask is often used and worn at local festivals during dances.
Okame (or Otafuku) is the woman and means "Tortoise" (Kame) or  "Much Good Fortune" - both bringing symbol for long life and good fortune; especially when she marries, she brings good fortune into the relationship.
