Description
A superb and rare photo ofJohn Surtees, John Hartle and Mike Hailwood
shortly after finishing as
1 – 2 – 3
in the
500cc Senior T.T. race on the Isle of Man T.T. in 1960
!
It is a wonderful image that was taken on
the
18
th
of June 1960
. It shows, from left to right, John Hartle on his
factory M.V. Agusta four
(bike nr. 11), John Surtees on his
works MV Agusta 4
(bike nr. 5) and Mike Hailwood on his
Norton Manx
(bike nr. 4).
John Surtees won the race, never lapping under the
100 mph
(160 km/h). He won the race with a new record average speed of no less then
102.44 mph
(163.9 km/h)! Not only that, but he was the first one ever to win the race three times in succession! And he went on, winning the 500cc World Championship that year on the photographed machine.
On the photo we also see the magnificent John Hartle, the MV Agusta teammate of John Surtees, and he is congratulating no one other then Mike Hailwood on his 500cc Manx Norton! John Hartle finished second, Mike the Bike third. An amazing feat of the young Mike Hailwood on the Norton single, and a sign of things to become as his career was about to spin off to amazing multiple world championship winning heights! Stan
Hailwood, Mike’s father, is also seen on his photo. He has his hand on his son’s shoulder.
All in all it is a wonderful image, that shows three of the greatest riders that ever graced the motorcycle world in a gathering nothing less but fit to their status in motorcycling history:
Mike Hailwood won in total 76 Grand Prix races; three 250cc World Championships in 1961 (Honda), 1966 and 1967 (also on Honda); two 350cc World Championships in 1966 and 1967 (both on Honda) and four 500cc World Championships 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1965 (all on MV Agusta).
John Surtees won in total 38 Grand Prix races; three 350cc World Championships in 1958, 1959 and 1960 (all on MV Agusta) and four 500cc World Championships in 1956,
1958, 1959 and 1960 (all on MV Agusta).
The great John Hartle won in total 5 Grand Prix races; finished as second in the 350cc World Championship in 1958 and 1959 on MV Agusta; second in the 500cc World Championship on MV Agusta; and third in the 350cc World Championship in 1960 on MV Agusta; and finally third in the 500cc World Championship in 1960 (MV Agusta) and 1963 (Gilera).
The bikes complete the scene, the mighty MV Fours and the magnificent Norton Manx were as famous as their riders!
